Conservatories vs Extensions: Which Should I Choose?

12 Mar 2021

A commonly asked question is what the difference is between a conservatory and an extension. It makes sense that people consider this given that when people consider one of these things, the other is an alternate option. In order to help you understand why conservatories could be right for you, the C&W Direct team has put together the following guide full of advice.

How Is A Conservatory Different From an Extension?

If you’ve got to a point where you’re looking to upgrade your house by adding an extra room, there are two options in front of you. However, it’s important that you fully understand the differences between the two before you make your decision over whether to opt for a conservatory or an extension. The first thing to consider is the costs involved. Traditionally, a conservatory is a much cheaper alternative to an extension, mainly due to the lack of bricks and mortar labour costs.

The materials involved in building both structures are also extremely different, with your conservatory by C&W Direct being made mostly of Optitherm double glazed windows. Extensions are likely to take longer both in the planning and installation process due to their more complex design and need for more planning permission. An extension tends to be seen as very much a continuation of the house rather than an additional space.

Are Conservatories Energy Efficient?

One of the myths that we constantly find ourselves busting is that conservatories aren’t energy efficient and can’t be enjoyed all year round. Whilst that might have been the case for some of the much older designs in the past, here at C&W Direct we work hard to ensure that isn’t the case today. In order to do this, we exclusively use Optitherm A rated windows and Guardian Warm Roofs to keep the room cool in the Summer months and warm and cosy in the Winter months.

Our Optitherm windows also come with other benefits, such as being able to reduce 80% of the condensation in your house, thereby reducing mould and bacterial growth. Here at C&W Direct, we operate with our customers’ needs at the forefront of our minds with the intention of saving you money in the long run.
